Can you ride an e-scooter in winter? Generally speaking, yes – but cold, dampness, leaves, snow, and road salt affect range, grip, and braking distance. If you want to use your scooter year-round, you should not only protect the battery, but also check before every trip whether the road conditions, tires, and visibility allow for a safe ride at all.

Can you ride an e-scooter in winter?

A dry, cold winter day is not the same as an icy road. The decisive factors are the actual conditions: temperature, humidity, visibility, road condition, tires, and your own experience. Two-wheeled vehicles have only a small contact area with the road. Slippery conditions, wet leaves, and tracks can therefore become particularly critical.

Before every trip, the question should be: Can I safely handle the vehicle today? If the answer is uncertain, choose another mode of transport. Time pressure is not a good reason to set off in ice or snow.

Why does an e-scooter lose range in the cold?

At low temperatures, the electrochemical processes in the battery slow down. Internal resistance increases, and part of the stored energy is temporarily less available. A deeply chilled battery should first be brought to the charging temperature permitted by the manufacturer in a dry, suitable environment before charging. If a cold battery is brought into a warmer room, condensation can form. Therefore, allow the battery, connections, and charging socket to become completely dry and temperature-adjusted.

Does an e-scooter need winter tires in Switzerland?

There is no general requirement for winter tires in Switzerland. However, this does not release drivers from the duty to handle their vehicle safely at all times and keep it in roadworthy condition. Inappropriate tires can lead to legal and insurance consequences in the event of an accident.

Winter tires are available for many scooter and motorcycle tire sizes. They offer more grip at low temperatures and in poor road conditions. Whether a suitable approval is available for your model must be checked based on tire dimensions, load capacity, speed index, and vehicle documents.

Also, check tire pressure, tread, age, and damage regularly. Cold temperatures can change tire pressure. Use the value specified by the vehicle manufacturer – not a freely chosen "winter value."

How to ride safely with an e-scooter in wet and cold conditions?

Winter riding requires calmness. Abrupt steering, braking, and acceleration maneuvers can overwhelm the available grip. Road markings, metal covers, tracks, wet leaves, and shady areas can be particularly slippery.

What clothing is sensible in winter?

Clothing should keep you warm, be visible, and not restrict your movement. Gloves must allow enough feel for the throttle and brakes. A fogged-up visor or a shifting hood can dangerously restrict vision. How do you protect the e-scooter from road salt and dampness?

Salt and constant dampness can stress metal parts, plug connections, and surfaces. Remove dirt promptly according to the operating manual. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner: water can get into bearings, seals, and electrical areas under pressure.

• Allow the scooter to dry in a suitable place after a wet ride.
• Keep lights, reflectors, and license plates clean.
• Visually check brakes, tires, and plug connections.
• Use corrosion protection only in suitable areas – never on braking surfaces.
• Have unusual noises, stiff wheels, or error messages checked.

How do you store an e-scooter over the winter?

If you are not going to ride for several weeks, park the scooter in a dry, protected, and stable place. Many manufacturers recommend storing a removable battery partially charged in a dry, frost-free area. Often, around 50 to 60 percent is recommended – but the operating manual of your model is binding.

Check the charge level at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer. A battery should neither be deep-discharged nor remain unnecessarily fully charged for months. The charger should be stored dry and disconnected.

Which e-scooter is suitable for year-round use?

A "winter model" cannot be recognized by range alone. For year-round use, suitable tires, controllable brakes, good lighting, service access, spare parts, weather protection, and a practical charging solution count.
