E-scooter or E-Trottinett: What does it mean?
In everyday Swiss life, the terms E-Scooter and E-Trottinett are often used for the same vehicle: a compact electric vehicle without a seat that is ridden while standing. Which NIU e-scooter suits you?
Both models offer suspension, tubeless pneumatic tires, lighting, turn signals, and Bluetooth connectivity to the NIU app. The main differences lie in performance, braking system, tire size, weight, and charging time.

What to look out for when buying an e-scooter
Plan range realistically
Calculate the distance for the round trip plus a reserve. Cold temperatures, inclines, and frequent acceleration reduce the range.
Comfort on your route
Suspension and pneumatic tires are particularly relevant on cobblestones, rough asphalt, and longer routes.
Weight & transport
Those who use stairs, public transport, or a car trunk should check the weight, folding mechanism, and dimensions.
Brakes & visibility
Good modulation, functional lighting, and turn signals are more important in city traffic than mere peak values.
Check before buying
Is the e-scooter allowed on Swiss roads?
Not every e-scooter offered for sale may be used on public traffic areas. Classification depends on the specific Swiss version, technical limits, and mandatory equipment – not just the product name.
E-scooters in the corresponding Swiss vehicle class may reach a maximum of 20 km/h. From age 14 until the 16th birthday, a category M driver's license is required; from 16, no license is required for this class. Bicycle paths and lanes must be used; sidewalks are generally not permitted. Please have the suitability of the specific model confirmed before use in public traffic. Current rules from the FEDRO.
Range, battery, and maintenance

Which e-scooter is suitable for commuters?
Pay attention to sufficient real-world range, suspension, well-modulated brakes, reliable lighting, and a weight that is portable for your route. The KQi 200P is balanced; the KQi 300P offers more power reserves and a more comprehensive disc brake system.
How far does an e-scooter really go?
Manufacturer values are determined under defined conditions. In everyday life, the range decreases depending on temperature, rider weight, tire pressure, inclines, stop-and-go traffic, and riding mode. Therefore, plan for a reserve.
Do you need a driver's license for an e-scooter?
For a compliant e-scooter in the corresponding Swiss vehicle class: category M is required from age 14 to 16, and no license is required from age 16. Other vehicle classes may have different requirements.
Are you allowed to ride an e-scooter on the sidewalk?
Generally no. Traffic areas for bicycles apply; existing bike paths and lanes must be used. An exception exists only if signage explicitly permits shared use.
